Language and
nationalism are highly related to each other.
Nationalism is the tendency of being immersed and related to your
country or nation to a certain extreme.
Nationalism is when you express your ideas, thoughts, attitudes,
traditions and believes and other aspects of your culture in the language of
your nation. Language and nationalism
complete each other. Nationalism gives
power to the language of your nation.
So, nationalism may cause the language maintenance or the language loss
and this is related to the speakers of the language.
Language helps the
people establish their nationalism. If
the people are loyal to the language of their nation so their language will not
loss. If they keep use their language
in all the domains of the government and try to spread it wherever they go, and
also if they teach their language of the people who come to their country so
their language will consider one from the majority languages and not a minority
language. If the speakers of the
language feel that they want to add some words to their language because they
need it, they add it but they will be very patient in adding these words to not
destruct or endanger other words in the language of their nation. In this way, when the people use the language
of their nation and avoid ethnocentrism, so they are belong to their country
and they build their nationalism and lead it to maintain.
On the other hand, if
the speakers abandon the language of their nation or start to declare using it,
this will cause the language shift and then they will lose their language. When the speakers of the language start using
another language, other than the language of their nation or community their
language will end with death. In
migration and out migration are main causes that cause the language loss, since
the speakers of the language abandon their language of the nation and use
another language may be to gain power or because of certain circumstances. Then their language will be considered a
minority language and it stops surviving.
To sum up, language and
nationalism are connected and linked to each other. We as Arabs, we should keep
surviving; building and developing our language since this lead its
maintenance. We shouldn’t let any
language to destroy our language of nation.
Thus, nationalism will cause and lead to language maintenance to the
language of our nation instead of language loss.
